WHAT IS AQUACULTURE?
Aquaculture — often referred to as fish farming — is the growing and harvesting of plants and animals in all types of water environments, including both freshwater and saltwater.
WHAT IS A SALTY FARMER?
Just like farmers that toil in the soil, aquaculture farmers have their hands full, tending to fish, shellfish, algae and other species in the water. Think of them as farmers who work the water instead of the soil.
And although not all aquaculture takes place in salt water, we figure that any farmer who is innovative and bold enough to be part of this blue revolution, must be a little 'salty' at heart.

LOOK LIKE?
In tanks, ponds, cages, raceways, pens, spheres, pools, and in the ocean, aquaculture farms are diverse and evolving.
Recirculating farms are found on land or in buildings, and usually fish are kept in large pools where the water is continuously cleaned and recirculated.
Open Ocean aquaculture takes place in our oceans and involves growing fish in pens, spheres or other containment in natural waters.
Like any kind of farming, no two look alike. And as innovations advance, our fish farms are becoming more and more modern.
WHAT ARE THE BENEFITS TO AQUACULTURE?
As a complement to wild harvest fisheries, aquaculture can help meet the growing demand for seafood, reduce our dependence on imports, provide American jobs, and help rebuild wild fish stocks. More farmed fish means that we don't have to rely on wild fisheries to feed our growing demand for seafood.
And as aquaculture becomes mainstream, it provides the opportunity for more convenience and cost effectiveness.
